Canada before the Depression - game
The Fracture: Dirty Thirties
Before Canada could recover from one catastrophe, its response to that catastrophe helped set up the next.
Out of a population of roughly eight million, Canada suffered one of the highest per-capita death tolls of any Allied nation in the First World War. Whole cohorts of young men were gone from farms, small towns, and outport villages. The country that emerged in 1919 was short on labour, carrying an enormous war debt, and determined to reward the men who came home — decisions that would quietly shape the vulnerability of the decade to come.
You'll live through five of those decisions, from Ottawa, the Prairies, or the Maritimes. Choose as history did, and you'll watch the Depression arrive in Canada exactly as it did. Choose differently, and the story bends.
The characters are fictional composites, not real historical figures. Every policy, event, and statistic reflects the historical record. Newfoundland, which suffered catastrophically at Beaumont-Hamel in 1916, was still a separate dominion in this era and is not part of this story — a reminder that "Canada's war" and its aftermath looked different depending on where you stood.
Whose eyes will you see it through?

The Department of Smog
Can our militaries protect us from an unliveable planet? The rationale for their existence is that they protect - but in performing their duties, they also pollute … massively.
This videopoem series confronts the paradox of immense defense budgets causing a slow, borderless catastrophe.
